Why your hair colour fades sooner than expected.

Oxidative dyes, which comprise most permanent hair colours, form complex pigment molecules within the hair’s cortex. However, the integrity of the cuticle — the hair’s outer layer — critically dictates how long these molecules remain protected.

When the cuticle is lifted or compromised, these pigments are exposed to external aggressors. This exposure initiates a gradual breakdown, leading to a noticeable loss of vibrancy and tone over time.

Water, for instance, typically has a pH of around 7, which is alkaline relative to hair’s naturally acidic state of pH 4.5-5.5. Regular washing with tap water can cause the cuticle to swell and open, accelerating colour bleed.

Many conventional shampoos contain harsh surfactants like Sodium Laureth Sulfate, designed for aggressive cleansing. These agents strip away not only surface impurities but also the protective lipid barrier, making the hair more porous.

Most cleansing formulations prioritise lather over scalp and hair health, often leaving the cuticle vulnerable. Evera’s shampoos, however, use a gentle, coconut-derived cleanser (sodium coco-sulfate, which is a sulphate, so we never call them sulphate-free), helping preserve the hair’s natural pH and lipid integrity.

Beyond washing, environmental factors play a significant role. UV radiation from sunlight can break down pigment bonds directly, while chlorine in swimming pools acts as a bleaching agent.

High heat styling tools also contribute to fading. Excessive heat causes structural damage, further compromising the cuticle and accelerating the oxidation of colour molecules.

The choice of conditioner matters equally. Products rich in film-forming polymers can offer some surface protection, yet true colour retention stems from maintaining deep hair health.

Ultimately, preserving hair colour requires a holistic approach, focusing on gentle care, pH balance, and protection from environmental stress. It is a matter of consistent, considered attention.
