Glycerin and betaine, the quiet humectants.

More than 60% of a typical hair strand’s weight can be attributed to water content, a balance maintained in part by humectants. These compounds attract moisture from the atmosphere, binding it to the hair’s surface.

Glycerin, a natural polyol, is perhaps the most recognised. It is a hygroscopic substance, meaning it readily absorbs water molecules from its surroundings and holds them close.

Often derived from vegetable oils, glycerin creates a protective ‘film’ on the hair cuticle, helping to prevent moisture loss throughout the day. Its efficacy is dependent on ambient humidity — it performs best when there is some moisture in the air.

Betaine, by contrast, is an amino acid derivative found in sugar beet. It functions as an osmolyte, helping cells maintain their water balance under stress.

Beyond its humectant properties, betaine offers a conditioning effect. It can lend a smoother feel to the hair shaft without contributing to build-up.

Many formulations overload on single humectants, leading to a heavy feel. Evera products, crafted in Italy, use a considered blend, ensuring hydration without compromising lightness.

The two work in tandem: glycerin provides external hydration, while betaine supports the hair’s internal moisture regulation. This synergistic action contributes to suppleness and elasticity.

These ingredients are fundamental to maintaining hair’s natural pH and resilience. You will find them listed on the INCI — International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients — for many botanical formulations.

Evera’s shampoos, which include a gentle, coconut-derived cleanser (sodium coco-sulfate), are entirely silicone-free. This allows glycerin and betaine to perform without interference from occlusive agents.

All Evera products are paraben-free and vegan, formulated without animal testing, using organic-farmed botanicals. This ensures purity and a clear focus on ingredient efficacy.

Their quiet presence is a testament to the fact that effective haircare often relies on the subtle power of well-chosen, naturally derived compounds.
