A palm holding airy hair mousse in front of damp wavy hair

What reviewers call a mousse.

Posted by Evera on

A category is a way of selling. Mousse No.10 is listed as an ultra-light, leave-in mousse, made with plant-derived amino acids, aloe juice and nettle extract. That is the word on the bottle. It is not always the word in the reviews.

Of the reviews of the mousse on the site, several describe a different job. T. writes that it “has replaced both leave in conditioner and a volumising spray for me”. Olivia uses it “after the shower when the hair is damp” and says it “helps me comb through any tangles”. Alina has “been using also as a treatment for my hair”. Anastasia, who has fine hair, says it “adds real texture”.

Conditioner, detangler, treatment, texture. One product, four accounts, and none of them is wrong. A mousse is a way of delivering something: it is aerated, light, and easy to spread through damp hair. What it does for you depends on what your hair was missing. For one head, lightness reads as body. For another, the same lightness reads as slip.

We should be careful about what this shows. Reviews are individual accounts, not tests, and what a product does for one person’s hair is not a promise for yours. What the reviews do show is how a product is actually reached for, which is often different from how it was named.

There is one boundary we can state plainly, because it comes from the formula and not from any review. The mousse is not a gel. It will not give the hold or the set of a styling product, and it is not meant to.

Read within that limit, the reviews are a useful guide. They suggest that a good light product earns its place by being used for more than one thing. They also suggest that the best description of a product is the one its owners write for themselves.

Quotations are taken verbatim from customer reviews of Mousse No.10 published on everahair.com.
