When hair reaches temperatures exceeding 180°C, a precise denaturation of keratin proteins begins. This structural change is not immediately visible, but its cumulative impact weakens the hair fibre profoundly.

Under an electron microscope, heat-damaged hair displays distinct alterations. The outermost layer, the cuticle, typically a smooth arrangement of overlapping scales, begins to lift and fragment.

This lifting creates a rougher surface texture, diminishing the hair’s natural lustre and increasing its susceptibility to further mechanical damage. The protective barrier is compromised, exposing the inner cortex.

Within the cortex, heat causes the internal protein matrix to become disorganised. The α-helical structure of keratin, crucial for hair’s elasticity and strength, unwinds and aggregates irregularly.

Excessive heat can also melt and vaporise the protective lipid layer that coats each strand. This natural barrier, rich in 18-methyl eicosanoic acid, is vital for retaining moisture and maintaining suppleness.

The resulting loss of internal moisture creates microscopic voids within the hair shaft, which appear as small bubbles or empty spaces. These structural weaknesses render the hair brittle and prone to breakage.

Most conventional heat protection products rely on silicones to create a surface barrier. Evera’s approach, conversely, utilises specific plant-derived polysaccharides and humectants to form a resilient, breathable shield that actively mitigates thermal stress.

These botanical compounds work to stabilise the hair’s internal moisture balance, preventing the rapid desiccation that leads to protein denaturation. They offer protection without occluding the hair fibre.

The visible outcome of repeated heat exposure — frizz, dullness, and split ends — is merely the macroscopic manifestation of these profound internal changes. Understanding this cellular reality is key.
