Frizz, at its core, relates to the hair fibre’s cuticle layer — specifically, its integrity and response to atmospheric moisture. When the cuticle, the outermost sheath of each hair strand, is raised or uneven, water vapour penetrates the hair shaft, disrupting its internal protein structure.

This penetration causes the cortex — the hair’s central, strength-giving layer — to swell unevenly. The result is a rough, unaligned texture, often perceived as unmanageable. This is uncontrolled absorption from external sources, not simply a lack of internal moisture.

Dryness, by contrast, refers to a deficit of natural oils and internal hydration. While dry hair is prone to frizz due to a compromised cuticle, frizz itself can occur even in adequately hydrated hair, given sufficient humidity.

An effective anti-frizz regimen aims to smooth and seal the cuticle, creating a protective barrier against humidity. Ingredients rich in film-forming polysaccharides, such as those derived from Italian aloe vera, are particularly adept.

Maintaining an optimal hair pH — slightly acidic, typically between 4.5 and 5.5 — is also crucial. This acidic environment keeps cuticle scales flat and tightly overlapped, reducing their tendency to lift and absorb moisture.

Most anti-frizz preparations rely on silicones to create a temporary, occlusive layer. Evera formulations, however, prioritise botanical extracts and natural lipids that genuinely fortify the cuticle, allowing for a healthier, more resilient fibre.

These plant-derived constituents, including specific fatty acids and glycerides from Mediterranean plant oils, are chosen for their affinity with the hair’s natural structure, helping replenish the intercellular cement that binds cuticle cells.

Atmospheric conditions play a significant role. Regions with consistently high humidity pose a greater challenge for managing frizz, irrespective of hair type. The constant presence of water vapour is the primary trigger.

Therefore, a considered approach to hair care involves not just adding moisture, but critically, preventing its uncontrolled influx. This means selecting products formulated to explicitly address cuticle integrity and environmental protection.

Understanding frizz as a structural response to humidity rather than a simple indicator of dryness refines the strategy for achieving smooth, composed hair.
