Silicone-Free Hair Care: What Happens When You Stop Coating Your Hair

Posted by Evera Hair on

Silicones are in almost everything — shampoos, conditioners, serums, styling products. They create instant smoothness, shine, and a feeling of "healthy" hair. So why are more people switching to silicone-free hair care?

Because that smoothness is an illusion. And the longer you rely on it, the worse your actual hair becomes underneath.

What Silicones Actually Do to Your Hair

Silicones (dimethicone, cyclomethicone, amodimethicone, and dozens of other -cone and -siloxane variants) work by coating each hair strand in a thin plastic-like film. This film:

  • Reflects light — creating artificial shine
  • Smooths the cuticle surface — reducing friction and tangles
  • Seals in whatever moisture (or dryness) exists at the time of application

Sounds great. But here is the problem: this film also prevents moisture, nutrients, and repair ingredients from reaching the hair shaft. Over time, silicone buildup creates a cycle of dependency where your hair needs more and more product to look acceptable, while the actual hair structure deteriorates underneath.

The Silicone Dependency Cycle

  1. You use a silicone conditioner → hair feels smooth and shiny
  2. Silicone builds up over 2-3 weeks → hair feels heavy, greasy, flat
  3. You use a harsh sulphate shampoo to strip the buildup → hair feels dry and rough
  4. You apply more silicone conditioner → hair feels smooth again
  5. Repeat indefinitely — with your actual hair getting weaker each cycle

This cycle is so normalised that most people do not realise it is happening. They assume their hair is "naturally" dry or frizzy, when in reality, it is the silicone-sulphate cycle creating the problem.

What Happens When You Go Silicone-Free

Week 1-2: The Transition

When you first switch to silicone-free products, old silicone buildup begins to wash away. Your hair may temporarily feel:

  • Rougher or more textured than usual
  • More tangled (the silicone slip is gone)
  • Drier in some areas, oilier at the roots

This is normal and temporary. It is not a sign that silicone-free products do not work — it is a sign that your hair was relying on a synthetic coating rather than genuine health.

Week 3-4: Recalibration

As the last traces of buildup wash away, your hair begins to absorb moisture and nutrients properly for the first time. You will notice:

  • Hair feels lighter and bouncier
  • Natural texture becomes more apparent
  • Scalp feels cleaner for longer between washes

Month 2+: Real Results

This is where the transformation happens. With hydrolysed plant proteins finally able to penetrate the hair shaft (no silicone barrier blocking them), you will experience:

  • Genuine softness — from internal hydration, not external coating
  • Natural shine — from a healthy, smooth cuticle surface
  • Less breakage — from protein-repaired internal structure
  • Better colour retention — from a sealed, healthy cuticle
  • Longer between washes — no buildup attracting dirt

What Replaces Silicone?

In Evera's formulas, several plant-derived ingredients deliver the benefits people expect from silicones — without the buildup:

  • Hydrolysed vegetable proteins — Genuine smoothing from internal repair, not surface coating. Present in all Evera products.
  • Lotus root extract — Natural slip and detangling agent. Present in all products including GA Liquid Gloss.
  • Marshmallow root — Mucilage-rich botanical that provides natural moisture and slip in the Hydrating Line.
  • Rice extracts — Smooth the cuticle naturally, creating genuine light-reflecting shine.

Tips for a Smooth Transition

  • Use a protein treatment (GA Liquid Gloss) in week 1 to help fill gaps exposed by silicone removal
  • Be patient through weeks 2-3 — the transition period is temporary
  • Use a deep conditioning mask weekly to replace the moisture that silicones were locking out
  • Avoid the temptation to use a silicone serum "just once" — it resets the transition
