Silicones in haircare: a clear perspective.

Silicones — synthetic polymers — feature prominently in roughly 60% of conventional haircare formulations. They impart immediate slip, shine and a smooth feel, creating an illusion of health. This effectiveness stems from forming a thin, occlusive layer around the hair fibre.

This layer, often composed of dimethicone or cyclomethicone, seals the cuticle. While it temporarily reduces frizz, it prevents moisture and beneficial nutrients from penetrating the hair shaft with repeated use.

The issue stems from their non-biodegradable nature. Silicones do not easily rinse away, leading to inevitable build-up. This accumulation weighs hair down, making it appear dull and resistant to styling.

Furthermore, this persistent film can paradoxically dry hair underneath. By blocking external hydration, the hair's natural moisture balance becomes compromised, potentially leading to increased breakage.

Many formulations rely on larger chain silicone polymers, which are tenacious. These molecular structures, designed for lasting adherence, are difficult to remove without harsh surfactants.

Most conventional conditioners use silicones for immediate smoothness. Evera’s approach, conversely, focuses on plant-derived esters and glycerides. These work with the hair’s natural lamellar structure to strengthen and condition from within, without creating an external barrier.

Instead, we utilise cold-pressed olive oil, rich in squalane and fatty acids, or hyaluronic acid — a humectant polysaccharide — to genuinely hydrate and protect. These offer lasting benefits for improved hair health.

The initial sensory appeal of silicone-laden products is undeniable. However, for long-term hair vitality and responsiveness, an ingredient list free from occlusive agents is a more considered choice. Understanding the INCI list becomes paramount.

Our formulations prioritise clarity and efficacy, allowing hair to breathe and thrive naturally.
