Curls and the moisture–protein balance.

Curls and the moisture–protein balance.

Posted by Evera on

Curly hair, due to its helical structure, presents unique challenges to moisture retention. Its cuticle layers are often more open than straight hair, allowing hydration to escape readily.

Adequate moisture is paramount for curls. It provides elasticity, prevents frizz, and maintains hair shaft integrity, preventing brittleness and breakage.

Conversely, protein — specifically keratin — offers strength and resilience. It rebuilds compromised areas along the hair fibre, ensuring durability against stressors.

Haircare efficacy for curls hinges on a precise moisture–protein equilibrium. An imbalance, often misdiagnosed as generic dryness, needs careful attention.

Excessive moisture, from heavy conditioners or humectants in humid conditions, leads to hygral fatigue. Hair becomes overly soft, limp, and stretches beyond limits.

An excess of protein causes stiffness and a coarse texture. Too much makes hair rigid, reducing flexibility and increasing susceptibility to snapping.

The solution lies in a considered routine alternating between hydrating and strengthening treatments. Look for formulations blending film-forming humectants — like glycerine — with hydrolysed plant proteins to work synergistically.

Many formulations only address surface hydration, offering temporary softness. Evera’s approach prioritises a balanced lipid and protein complex to support both cuticle and cortex, ensuring enduring strength and suppleness. Regularly assess your hair’s feel — is it overly soft or too rigid? Adjust your regimen accordingly.

Cultivating healthy curls is not about singular interventions, but a continuous, informed dialogue with your hair’s evolving needs.
