Conditioner on the scalp. A question of formulation.

Conditioner on the scalp. A question of formulation.

The average scalp pH sits between 4.5 and 5.5 — a slightly acidic environment crucial for maintaining the skin barrier and hair cuticle integrity. This natural acidity helps to keep undesirable microbial growth in check and prevents moisture loss.

For decades, conventional wisdom has advised against applying conditioner directly to the scalp, primarily due to formulations heavy in occlusive ingredients. These often include synthetic silicones or waxes, which can accumulate, leading to blocked follicles, irritation or a greasy appearance.

Such build-up not only weighs hair down but can also disrupt the scalp’s delicate microbiome. The result is often an imbalance — either excessive oiliness or dryness — alongside diminished hair health from the root.

However, the scalp is skin, and like all skin, it benefits from thoughtful conditioning. The roots of the hair, too, are the newest and often most vulnerable sections, requiring support to grow strong and healthy.

Most conditioners are designed solely for the lengths, where hair is older and more prone to dryness. Their primary function is often to smooth the cuticle with emollients, without considering the living scalp beneath.

Evera’s approach differs fundamentally. Our conditioners are formulated with plant-led, biocompatible ingredients, chosen for their capacity to nurture both hair and scalp. We prioritise light, naturally derived fatty acids and polysaccharides.

Instead of heavy silicones, our formulations utilise plant oils — often cold-pressed — and hydrolysed proteins that impart moisture without creating a suffocating film. This allows the scalp to breathe and its natural functions to remain undisturbed.

Applying our conditioner directly to the scalp — massaging it gently into the roots — provides essential hydration and encourages a balanced environment. It helps to soothe, reduce flakiness and support robust hair growth from its origin.

This method ensures that every strand receives attention from its nascent point, promoting uniform strength and softness throughout the entire length. The aim is holistic health, beginning at the source.

The correct conditioner, when applied thoughtfully, can be a vital component of a balanced scalp and hair regimen. It is a nuanced understanding of product chemistry.
