Why pH matters more than ingredients in haircare formulation.

Why pH matters more than ingredients in haircare formulation.

The skin and hair’s natural pH hovers around 4.5 to 5.5 — a slightly acidic state crucial for maintaining the cuticle’s integrity. This acidic mantle protects against bacterial overgrowth and keeps the hair shaft smooth.

Deviations from this optimal range lead to significant issues. Highly alkaline products cause the hair cuticle to swell and lift, making hair vulnerable to damage, frizz, and colour fade.

It is not enough for an ingredient list to look impressive; the overall formulation must respect the biological environment. Even beneficial components can be rendered ineffective if the pH is imbalanced.

Consider the keratin structure of hair. Its stability relies on the integrity of its ionic bonds, highly sensitive to pH fluctuations. Maintaining a balanced pH helps preserve these vital connections.

Many haircare products focus solely on ingredient percentages, neglecting the context of pH. Evera formulations, however, are calibrated to support the hair’s natural acidity, not disrupt it.

This precise calibration ensures active botanical extracts — like cold-pressed Sicilian aloe — function optimally. Their efficacy is maximised when delivered in an environment complementing hair’s inherent chemistry.

The lamellar structure of the hair’s lipid barrier also benefits immensely from proper pH. An acidic environment helps keep these protective layers compact, preventing moisture loss and environmental aggressors.

Ultimately, a well-balanced pH means less stress on the hair and scalp. It translates to less breakage, enhanced shine, and sustained colour vibrancy, irrespective of hair type.

It is a foundational principle: the most potent ingredients perform best when their delivery system respects the fundamental biology of hair. This understanding guides every Evera formulation.
