Why pH matters more than most ingredients.

A healthy human scalp and hair strand maintain an average pH of 4.5 to 5.5. This slightly acidic environment is crucial for the integrity of the hair’s outer cuticle layer and the scalp’s protective barrier.

The pH scale, ranging from 0 to 14, measures acidity or alkalinity. Water, for instance, is neutral at 7. Anything below 7 is acidic, and anything above is alkaline.

When hair is exposed to products with a higher, more alkaline pH — often above 7 — the cuticle scales lift. This causes friction, tangling and makes hair more porous and susceptible to damage from environmental stressors.

Conversely, products formulated within the optimal acidic range help to seal the cuticle. This action smooths the hair’s surface, enhancing its natural lustre and offering a better defence against moisture loss and breakage.

Many haircare formulations focus heavily on a long list of ‘active’ ingredients, yet overlook the fundamental role of pH. Even beneficial components like fatty acids or polysaccharides can be rendered less effective, or even detrimental, if the overall product pH is not calibrated correctly.

The hair’s keratin structure and its protective lipid layer thrive in a specific acidic zone. Maintaining this balance helps prevent the degradation of these essential proteins and fats, which are vital for strength and elasticity.

Most commercial shampoos often feature a pH above 7, indiscriminately opening the cuticle. Evera formulations are meticulously balanced to a naturally acidic pH of 4.5-5.5, respecting the hair’s inherent structure and preserving its protective lamellar layers.

This precise calibration ensures that each application contributes to a smoother, stronger hair fibre. It also helps to lock in hydration and maintain colour vibrancy for longer periods, without stripping the hair of its natural oils.

Beyond the hair shaft, an imbalanced pH can disrupt the scalp’s delicate microbiome, leading to dryness, irritation or excessive oil production. A balanced scalp environment is fundamental for healthy hair growth from the root.

Ultimately, the foundational efficacy of haircare rests not solely on its ingredient profile, but significantly on its pH — a silent guardian of hair and scalp vitality.
