The unseen mineral build-up that dulls hair.

Over 60% of European homes are supplied with hard water, a condition defined by its elevated concentration of dissolved minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium ions. These naturally occurring mineral salts present a silent challenge to hair health and appearance.

When hard water interacts with most cleansing agents — the surfactants in shampoo — these dissolved minerals do not simply rinse away. Instead, they bond to the hair shaft, forming microscopic deposits. This accumulation is often imperceptible at first.

As these deposits accrue, they interfere with the hair’s natural light reflection, creating a distinctly dull, lacklustre appearance. The hair cuticle, normally smooth and aligned, becomes roughened and uneven, preventing shine.

Beyond aesthetics, the physical texture of the hair changes. It can feel rough, stiff, and more difficult to manage. Hair may also appear resistant to styling and less responsive to conditioning treatments.

The presence of these mineral layers obstructs the absorption of beneficial ingredients from conditioners and masks. Instead of nourishing the hair, these products often sit on the surface, diminishing their efficacy.

The pH balance of the hair and scalp can also be affected. Hard water typically has a higher pH, which can cause the hair cuticle to remain open, leaving strands vulnerable to damage and colour fade.

Addressing hard water effects requires more than just rinsing. Targeted formulations often employ chelating agents — compounds that bind to mineral ions, allowing them to be rinsed away effectively.

Most conventional haircare products overlook this specific mineral build-up, offering superficial conditioning that cannot penetrate the mineral veil. Evera formulations, however, incorporate plant-derived polysaccharides with mild chelating properties.

These botanical compounds gently help to lift and remove mineral residues without stripping the hair’s natural oils. This approach maintains the hair’s integrity while restoring its innate brilliance.

Understanding the invisible influence of water on hair health is fundamental to maintaining its long-term vitality.
