The subtle impact of hard water on hair health.

Over 60% of European households use hard water, a condition defined by a high concentration of dissolved minerals — primarily calcium carbonate and magnesium ions. This ubiquitous presence means many unknowingly contend with its effects on their hair.

When these mineral ions come into contact with hair, they do not simply rinse away. Instead, they adhere to the hair shaft, forming a microscopic film that accumulates over time. This build-up prevents the hair’s cuticle from lying flat.

A lifted cuticle results in reduced light reflection, which manifests as a noticeable lack of shine and a dull, lifeless appearance. Furthermore, this mineral deposit can make hair feel rougher and less manageable to comb.

The integrity of the hair fibre is also affected. Hard water minerals can disrupt the hair’s natural pH balance, potentially leading to increased porosity and a diminished capacity to retain essential moisture.

Products designed to cleanse or condition may also be less effective. The mineral ions can react with surfactants, forming a scum that further contributes to residue and reduces the efficacy of active ingredients.

Most conventional shampoos are formulated to cleanse but do little to address mineral adhesion directly. Evera formulations, however, incorporate specific botanical extracts known for their mild chelating properties, helping to mitigate this mineral build-up gently.

These plant-derived compounds work by binding to the metal ions, allowing them to be rinsed away more effectively without stripping the hair’s natural protective layers. This approach respects the delicate lipid structure.

Recognising the signal of dull, weighed-down hair is the first step. Addressing hard water’s impact involves thoughtful product selection, focusing on formulations that support the hair’s natural resilience against environmental stressors.

A considered approach helps maintain the hair’s inherent luminosity and smooth texture, ensuring its long-term health.
