The ambiguity of 'natural' claims in haircare.

Many products proudly display a ‘natural’ label, sometimes signifying as little as 50% plant-derived ingredients. This often overlooks the rigorous chemical synthesis involved in creating the other half.

Unlike food, there is no universal legal definition or standardised certification for ‘natural’ in cosmetics. This absence allows for broad interpretations and can mislead consumers.

An ingredient derived from a plant, such as a fatty alcohol from coconut oil, may still undergo significant chemical processing — making its ‘natural’ claim tenuous.

Consider the INCI list. While it mandates ingredients be listed, it does not distinguish between a minimally processed botanical extract and a chemically modified plant derivative.

Many brands employ terms like ‘botanical blend’ without detailing the specific extraction methods or the concentration of active compounds.

Most formulations may contain a high percentage of water, allowing a small amount of a truly natural ingredient to still contribute to a ‘natural origin’ percentage, despite a high content of synthetic emulsifiers or stabilisers.

Evera, by contrast, prioritises clarity. Our formulations focus on high concentrations of specific plant actives, such as cold-pressed Sicilian aloe polysaccharides, whose efficacy is measurable.

We ensure that our plant materials are sourced for their inherent potency and processed with methods like gentle enzymatic extraction to preserve delicate compounds.

Understanding the journey from plant to product — including the precise methods of separation and purification — is crucial for discerning true ingredient integrity.

The label ‘natural’ alone provides insufficient information for informed choices.
