Drying hair. Cotton, microfibre, t-shirt — and why.

The hair shaft, especially when wet, is remarkably delicate; its outer cuticle layer can lift, making it prone to friction damage. The way we remove water after washing significantly impacts hair health.

Traditional terry cotton towels absorb effectively. Their loop pile construction makes them highly hydrophilic. Yet, this texture can be too abrasive for fragile, wet strands, leading to breakage and frizz.

Vigorous rubbing with cotton can rough up the hair’s outermost layer, causing cuticular scales to fray. This contributes to dullness and increased porosity, leaving hair susceptible to damage.

Microfibre towels, often a blend of polyamide and polyester, are celebrated for ultra-absorbent properties. Their fine, dense fibres wick away moisture rapidly, considerably shortening drying time.

However, microfibre can sometimes over-dry the hair, stripping essential moisture. This strong absorption may also create an undesirable electrostatic charge, leading to static and flyaways.

An old cotton t-shirt or a smooth, thin cotton towel offers a softer alternative. Lacking the aggressive pile of terrycloth, these materials are far gentler on the hair cuticle, absorbing water slowly.

While a t-shirt takes longer, the reduced mechanical stress helps preserve natural oils and maintain smoother cuticular scales. This method is favoured for delicate or highly porous hair types.

Most common drying habits involve rubbing hair vigorously for speed. Evera’s approach, however, considers the cumulative effect of gentle practices, supporting the hair’s innate structure and moisture balance.

The goal is to gently blot and squeeze excess water, not rub. This minimises mechanical stress, allowing hair to retain balanced hydration. A considered choice in drying material supports overall hair vitality.
