Bleach recovery — what can and cannot be undone.

Bleach recovery — what can and cannot be undone.

When hair is bleached, hydrogen peroxide and ammonia penetrate the cuticle, oxidising melanin pigments. This process also damages the hair’s internal protein structure, specifically the keratin — its primary component.

The outer cuticle scales, normally smooth and overlapping, become lifted and porous, diminishing the hair’s natural protective barrier. This porosity makes bleached hair more susceptible to further damage and moisture loss.

Internally, the cortex experiences significant disruption. Disulphide bonds, crucial for hair’s strength and elasticity, are broken, leading to reduced tensile strength and increased propensity for breakage.

Some of this damage, particularly the lifting of the cuticle, can be partially addressed. Conditioning treatments rich in emollients and proteins can help smooth the cuticle and temporarily reduce porosity.

However, the loss of substantial amounts of keratin and the irreversible breaking of many disulphide bonds within the cortex cannot be fully reversed. New hair growth is the only true reset for this level of structural degradation.

Most conventional treatments aim to mask the damage with heavy silicones, creating superficial smoothness that does not address underlying issues. Evera’s approach focuses on supporting the hair’s natural recovery mechanisms.

Our formulations utilise specific botanical lipids and saccharides that mimic the hair’s natural oils, helping to restore the lamellar structure of the lipid barrier. This supports moisture retention and offers protection.

Maintaining an optimal pH balance is also critical for bleached hair. Products with a slightly acidic pH help to re-seal the cuticle, preventing further protein loss and enhancing shine.

Regular, gentle care — minimising heat styling, avoiding harsh chemicals, and consistent deep conditioning — is paramount. These practices help manage existing damage and protect new growth.

While some damage is permanent, diligent and informed care can significantly improve the appearance and tactile quality of bleached hair.
