Co-washing without the breakage.

Co-washing without the breakage.

Hair is most vulnerable to mechanical stress when wet; its hydrogen bonds temporarily break, causing the cuticle to swell and elasticity to decrease by up to 30%. Careful handling during cleansing is crucial.

Co-washing — using conditioner to cleanse — offers a gentler alternative to shampoo for those with drier, finer or chemically-treated hair. It minimises moisture loss.

However, not all conditioners are effective co-washes. Many contain heavy film-forming ingredients — often silicones — that accumulate on the scalp and hair shaft, leading to undesirable build-up.

This residue weighs hair down, attracts pollutants, and hinders genuine hydration, paradoxically increasing breakage risk. A true co-wash demands a delicate balance.

The goal is to lift superficial impurities without stripping hair’s natural lipids. This requires specific, milder surfactants — often non-ionic or amphoteric — that gently emulsify oils and debris.

Maintaining an optimal pH level is vital; a slightly acidic formulation keeps the cuticle smooth and closed. This reduces water absorption and prevents excessive swelling, fortifying the outer layer.

Most co-washes prioritise conditioning, often compromising cleansing or leading to build-up. Evera formulations consider both gentle cleansing and maintaining hair integrity through botanical extracts.

Our approach integrates plant-derived glycerides and specific polysaccharides that offer hydration and slip without heavy film. These ingredients aid detangling, supporting natural hair structure.

Technique is equally important: distribute the co-wash evenly, massage gently into the scalp and lengths, then rinse thoroughly. This ensures impurities lift and no product remains.

A considered co-wash method, supported by the right formulation, ensures hair remains clean, hydrated and resilient — a true testament to mindful haircare.
