Why we use henna leaf, not henna powder.

The primary active compound in henna, lawsone, is found concentrated in the leaves of the Lawsonia inermis plant. This naphthoquinone is responsible for the plant’s well-documented conditioning and colour-imparting properties when applied topically.

Traditional henna powder is produced by grinding dried leaves, a process that significantly increases the material’s surface area. This exposes sensitive phytocompounds to oxygen and light, initiating oxidative degradation almost immediately.

The pulverised form also presents opportunities for adulteration — the inclusion of inert fillers or other substances. Such additions dilute the active concentration and compromise the ingredient’s purity and intended effect.

Most commercial henna products rely on finely milled powders for ease of formulation and cost. Evera, however, sources whole henna leaves, meticulously selecting mature foliage with optimal lawsone content, directly from cultivation partners.

Our process prioritises the preservation of the leaf’s natural integrity. By working with the whole leaf, we safeguard not only lawsone but also the intricate blend of other beneficial polysaccharides and phenolic compounds present in the plant.

This careful handling minimises exposure to environmental stressors, significantly reducing the rate of degradation. The botanical matrix of the whole leaf provides a protective environment for its active constituents, maintaining their stability.

The result is an extract that retains a higher concentration of active molecules and a more complete spectrum of the plant’s natural properties. This translates directly to enhanced efficacy in our haircare formulations.

The pH balance and structural components of the intact leaf contribute to a more stable extract, unlike powders where rapid shifts in chemical equilibrium can occur upon processing and storage.

Our commitment to using the leaf form underscores a dedication to ingredient transparency and purity. There is no question of unknown fillers or unexpected interactions that can arise from compromised raw materials.

This deliberate choice ensures that the natural power of henna is delivered to the hair in its most authentic and effective state.
