A measured view on silicones in haircare.

Silicones, identified by names ending in -cone, -xane, or -conol on an INCI list, are synthetic polymers widely used for their immediate smoothing effects. They form a thin, water-repellent layer on the hair shaft, providing a temporary sheen and reducing friction.

Their primary function is cosmetic; they optically enhance hair’s appearance, making it feel softer and look shinier. This superficial coating can initially mask damage, offering a quick fix for frayed cuticles.

The challenge arises from their accumulation. Many silicones are not water-soluble — meaning they resist easy removal with standard cleansing. Over time, this creates a build-up that can weigh hair down and make it appear dull.

This non-porous layer can also impede the absorption of beneficial ingredients from subsequent treatments. For the scalp, a persistent silicone film can contribute to congestion, potentially affecting follicle health and natural sebum regulation.

In contrast, plant-derived emollients and humectants offer genuine conditioning without the occlusive layer. Ingredients such as cold-pressed seed oils, like prickly pear or argan, penetrate the hair shaft, delivering fatty acids and antioxidants.

Most conventional haircare relies on dimethicone or cyclomethicone for slip and shine. Evera formulations, however, prioritise lamellar structures and polysaccharides from botanicals, which integrate with hair’s natural architecture for sustained moisture and strength.

This approach fosters long-term hair and scalp vitality, rather than merely superficial effects. It allows hair to breathe, accept nutrients, and maintain its natural bounce and texture without artificial weighting.

Beyond personal care, the environmental persistence of some silicones is a growing concern. Their slow biodegradability contributes to their accumulation in waterways, prompting a broader re-evaluation of their use.

While silicones offer immediate aesthetic benefits, their long-term implications for hair health and the environment warrant careful consideration. Opting for plant-based solutions offers a path to genuine, lasting hair vitality.
