The delicate balance of moisture and protein for curls.

Curly hair’s unique elliptical cross-section renders it more prone to dryness than straight hair. This shape impedes natural scalp oils — sebum — from travelling down the hair shaft effectively.

This inherent dryness often correlates with higher porosity, where the hair’s outer cuticle layer is frequently raised. This makes hair susceptible to environmental stressors and allows moisture to escape readily. Consistent hydration is paramount.

Moisture provides elasticity, pliability and reduces breakage. Humectants like hyaluronic acid or plant-derived polysaccharides draw water into the hair. Emollients, such as botanical oils, then seal this moisture within the hair shaft.

However, moisture alone is insufficient. Hair is primarily composed of keratin, a protein essential for structural integrity, strength and bounce. Without adequate protein, curls can appear limp, mushy or overly stretched.

Protein treatments temporarily patch gaps in the hair’s cortex and cuticle, reinforcing its internal structure. Hydrolysed proteins, broken into smaller amino acids, are particularly effective, penetrating the hair shaft more easily.

The challenge lies in finding the correct ratio. Over-moisturised hair — often termed hygral fatigue — feels overly soft, weak and loses definition. Conversely, too much protein can make hair stiff, brittle and prone to snapping.

This equilibrium is not static; it adjusts with environmental factors and styling habits. A consistent, tailored regimen is more effective than sporadic intensive treatments. Products with a balanced pH help maintain cuticle health.

Most conventional haircare ranges separate protein and moisture, necessitating multiple products or complex routines. Evera formulations, by contrast, are designed to deliver a harmonious blend of botanical proteins and deep hydrators, simplifying the process.

This integrative method ensures curls receive both strengthening protein and elasticity-boosting moisture in a single, well-calibrated application. Understanding this interplay is fundamental for truly vibrant curls.
