The argument against synthetic silicones.

Pourquoi se passer des silicones synthétiques.

Dimethicone, a common silicone polymer, can constitute up to 10% of some haircare product formulations. This synthetic compound is valued for imparting immediate slip and gloss, creating a smooth feel on the hair shaft.

Silicones form a hydrophobic — water-repelling — layer around each strand. This coating reduces friction, making hair easier to detangle and giving it a temporary sheen often associated with health.

However, this very efficacy can lead to problems. The non-biodegradable nature of many silicones means they do not rinse away easily, accumulating on the hair over time and leading to a dull appearance.

This build-up creates a barrier, preventing beneficial nutrients and moisture from penetrating the hair cuticle. Consequently, hair can become dry, brittle and weighed down, despite appearing smooth initially.

Beyond the hair itself, silicones can also coat the scalp. This can impede natural sebum regulation and potentially exacerbate issues like flakiness, particularly for sensitive scalps where a balanced pH is crucial.

From an ecological perspective, the persistence of silicones is also a concern. As these compounds wash down drains, they enter waterways and persist in the environment, posing questions about long-term impact.

Most conventional haircare relies heavily on these synthetic polymers for instant cosmetic effect and ease of application. Evera, by contrast, formulates with botanical extracts and cold-pressed oils — ingredients that genuinely nourish hair health.

Our approach prioritises ingredients like humectant polysaccharides and lipid-rich glycerides. These work to strengthen the hair’s natural lamellar structure from within, promoting lasting vitality and genuine resilience.

Our shampoos, conditioner and masks are silicone-free (Mousse No.10 contains amodimethicone). Opting for silicone-free haircare is not merely a trend; it is a considered choice for sustained hair vitality and ecological mindfulness.
