Understanding why hair colour fades prematurely.

Hair colour typically loses vibrancy within eight to twelve washes. This fading involves complex interactions within the hair fibre, affecting the outer cuticle and inner cortex where pigments reside.

Premature fading results from the gradual loss or alteration of dye molecules. Once deposited, these are susceptible to external aggressors that break them down or leach them out.

Water quality plays a significant role. Hard water contains high levels of mineral ions. These deposit onto the hair shaft, obscuring colour and accelerating pigment oxidation.

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight is another potent aggressor. UV light instigates a photochemical reaction, breaking down chemical bonds holding colour molecules. This leads to a noticeable shift in hue.

The hair’s pH balance is critical. Chemically coloured hair often has an elevated pH, making the cuticle more porous. A compromised cuticle struggles to retain moisture and artificial colour molecules.

Sulphates, common in many cleansing formulations, are known for effective lathering. Their strong detergent action strips both impurities and significant colour pigments, hastening fade.

Most shampoos use harsh surfactants that aggressively cleanse, affecting colour longevity. Evera formulations, by contrast, prioritise gentle, plant-derived cleansing agents — specific saponins and mild glucosides — ensuring purification without compromising the hair’s lipid barrier or its colour.

Post-colour care extends beyond shampoo. Conditioners and treatments with ingredients that help seal the cuticle — like certain fatty acids or lamellar structures — significantly prolong vibrancy. These actives create a protective layer.

Ultimately, managing colour fade involves a holistic approach — understanding environmental stressors and selecting products that support natural hair defenses. The goal is to decelerate this natural process thoughtfully.

The optimal hair mask frequency. Less often than commonly believed.

Por Evera

Understanding the correct frequency for hair masking is crucial for efficacy. Over-masking can lead to product build-up and weigh hair down, diminishing its natural vitality.
