Cold-pressing botanical materials at controlled low temperatures — typically below 45°C — preserves the delicate integrity of fatty acids and heat-sensitive compounds.

This method extracts the complete lipid profile of a seed or fruit, retaining its full spectrum of glycerides, phytosterols and vitamins. The resulting oil is biologically active and structurally intact, mirroring its natural state.

In contrast, reconstituted oils often begin with solvent extraction at high temperatures, which can degrade sensitive plant esters and phenolic compounds. The crude oil is then refined, bleached and deodorised, stripping away much of its inherent vitality.

To mimic a natural profile, specific fatty acids — such as palmitic acid or linoleic acid — may be added back into the refined base. This process creates a product that meets a compositional specification but lacks the complex synergy of a truly whole oil.

A practical test demonstrates the difference. Cold-pressed oils typically exhibit a richer colour, a characteristic scent, and a more viscous texture due to the presence of waxes and unsaponifiable matter.

Reconstituted alternatives, by design, are often clear, virtually scentless and feel lighter. While these qualities might seem desirable for formulation ease, they signal a diminished natural complexity.
