The pH scale, decoded.

Geplaatst door Evera op

The pH scale, measuring acidity and alkalinity, runs from 0 to 14. Hair and scalp ideally maintain a slightly acidic state, typically between 4.5 and 5.5.

This natural acidity is crucial for maintaining the hair’s outermost layer — the cuticle — in a smooth, closed state. When cuticles lie flat, hair reflects light more effectively, appearing shinier and feeling smoother.

Conversely, highly alkaline products cause cuticle layers to lift. This leads to increased friction, making hair rougher and prone to tangling, compromising structural integrity.

Most conventional shampoos often have an alkaline pH, stripping the hair’s natural protective mantle. Evera formulations, however, are carefully balanced within the hair’s optimal acidic range, respecting the scalp’s natural biome and preserving cuticle health.

Beyond the hair fibre, scalp pH also plays a significant role. An imbalanced scalp environment can foster undesirable microbial growth, potentially leading to irritation or dryness.

Formulators adjust product pH using specific ingredients, often mild acids like citric or lactic acid. The goal is to create a stable environment that supports the hair’s natural biology.

While some cleansing surfactants are inherently alkaline, their final formulation must be precisely adjusted. Even product water can influence pH, necessitating rigorous quality control.

Understanding the invisible science behind pH empowers a more informed approach to haircare. It underlines why selecting balanced products is fundamental to maintaining enduring hair vitality.
