Why most “natural” labels are meaningless.

Why most “natural” labels are meaningless.

The term “natural” on a cosmetic label often lacks a precise, universally recognised definition. Unlike organic certification, which adheres to strict guidelines for cultivation and processing, “natural” remains largely unregulated in the beauty industry.

This broadness allows brands to use the descriptor for products containing even a small percentage of naturally derived components. A formulation might include a single botanical extract alongside numerous synthetic ingredients and still be marketed as “natural”.

Consider the INCI list — the International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients. This standardised system details every ingredient, yet it doesn’t inherently distinguish between a naturally occurring compound and a chemically synthesised one.

The sourcing and processing methods are equally critical. An ingredient sourced from nature but heavily processed with harsh chemicals may lose much of its beneficial integrity, despite its origin.

Most brands use “natural” as a marketing umbrella, offering little transparency about their raw materials. Evera, however, focuses on specific, potent botanicals, often cold-pressed or carefully extracted, to preserve their inherent power.

For instance, our Sicilian aloe vera is processed to retain its high concentration of polysaccharides, the complex sugars responsible for its deeply hydrating properties. Purity and potency are paramount.

Without understanding these nuances, consumers are left to navigate a landscape of ambiguous claims. A “natural” product might contain synthetic fragrances or preservatives that contradict its perceived purity.

True efficacy in plant-led haircare stems from a precise understanding of each active ingredient. It is about the specific molecule, its concentration and its bioavailability, not merely its initial source.

Therefore, looking beyond the simple “natural” claim, and examining the full ingredient list and a brand’s sourcing philosophy, offers a more reliable path to understanding a product’s true value.

The optimal hair mask frequency. Less often than commonly believed.

Par Evera

Understanding the correct frequency for hair masking is crucial for efficacy. Over-masking can lead to product build-up and weigh hair down, diminishing its natural vitality.
