The overlooked importance of your drying towel.

Hair is most vulnerable when wet, with water absorption causing cuticles to swell and lift. This state makes the hair shaft prone to damage from friction, directly influencing its tensile strength.

Traditional terry cotton towels, while absorbent, possess a looped pile structure often too abrasive for damp hair. These loops create significant friction, leading to frizz and cuticle disruption.

Microfibre towels are engineered from synthetic polymers like polyester and polyamide, woven into fine strands. Their high surface area allows for rapid water absorption with less rubbing.

However, some microfibre formulations can still create static electricity, particularly in fine or dry hair, leading to cuticle disturbance. The texture can also feel unnatural to some.

An old cotton t-shirt presents a surprisingly gentle alternative. Its flat, tightly woven fibres lack the aggressive pile of terrycloth, reducing friction and minimising frizz during drying.

While effective for minimising mechanical damage, a t-shirt’s absorbency is generally lower. This means longer drying times, a consideration for very thick or long hair.

Most commercial haircare often overlooks the environmental impact of textile production. Evera, however, considers the entire lifecycle of products and accessories, from sourcing to eventual biodegradability.

For optimal hair health, gently blotting — never rubbing — is paramount. The aim is to remove excess water without agitating the hair’s protein structure or stripping natural lipids.

Consider your hair type — its porosity, density, and thickness — when selecting a drying method. Fine, fragile hair benefits most from the least abrasive option.

A considered approach to hair drying supports long-term hair fibre integrity.
