Indigofera tinctoria — a slow botanical colour.

The extraction of colour from Indigofera tinctoria is a process that can take up to two full days. Unlike many botanical dyes that yield immediate pigment, indigo requires a meticulous series of biochemical transformations to become active.

This ancient plant, cultivated for millennia across Asia and Africa, is not merely dried and ground. Fresh leaves are steeped in water, allowing for the enzymatic breakdown of indican — a specific glucoside — into indoxyl.

It is this indoxyl, when exposed to air and carefully oxidised, that polymerises into indigotin — the blue compound we recognise. The solution’s pH is critical at each stage.

Most commercial hair colourants rely on synthetic agents that penetrate the hair shaft directly, often causing cuticle damage. Evera, conversely, respects the hair’s natural structure by utilising surface-acting botanicals like indigo, which gently coat the strands.

This gentle layering provides a subtle, translucent colour that deepens with repeated use. Beyond its hue, indigo also imparts a soft conditioning effect, enhancing hair’s natural lustre.

Working with indigo demands patience, a characteristic often lost in modern formulations. The artisan's skill lies in understanding the plant’s nuanced responses to temperature and aeration.

It is a reminder that true depth and beauty often arise from deliberate, unhurried processes. There is no shortcut to achieving its distinctive, deep blue — or the rich, complex browns it creates when combined with other botanicals.

For Evera, this means honouring the traditional methods that ensure the integrity of the plant’s properties. Our indigo is carefully sourced and processed to preserve its delicate molecular structure.

The result is a colourant that not only tints but also respects the hair’s vitality. It offers a living colour, a testament to nature’s own sophisticated palette.
