Co-washing without the breakage.

Co-washing without the breakage.

Co-washing, or conditioner-only washing, employs cationic surfactants and fatty alcohols for cleansing, bypassing traditional foaming agents. While beneficial for moisture retention, it risks hygral fatigue without precise formulation and gentle use.

Hygral fatigue occurs as hair repeatedly swells and contracts with water, weakening its protein structure. Improper co-washing, especially with unsuitable conditioners, can exacerbate this, leading to brittle strands and breakage.

The key to successful co-washing lies in products specifically formulated for it. These contain fewer active cleansing agents than shampoos, yet enough to lift light impurities and scalp sebum.

Most standard conditioners prioritise lubrication and detangling; their emollients coat the hair. While useful post-shampoo, these can accumulate if used as the sole cleanser, weighing hair down.

Evera's co-washing approach utilises a careful blend of plant-derived ingredients. Our formulations incorporate cold-pressed botanical oils and naturally occurring glycerides, ensuring gentle cleansing whilst maintaining the hair's lipid barrier.

The product's pH balance is also critical. A slightly acidic pH helps keep the hair's cuticle flattened, reducing friction and preventing moisture loss during the washing process.

When applying, focus on massaging the scalp thoroughly to dislodge debris and stimulate circulation. Distribute lightly through the lengths, allowing water to aid its spread and rinse-out.

Insufficient rinsing is a common mistake. Ensure all product is thoroughly flushed from hair and scalp. Residual emollients attract environmental particles, making hair feel heavy and prone to breakage.

A well-executed co-wash results in hair that feels clean yet deeply hydrated, with significantly less mechanical stress. It offers a gentle alternative for those seeking to minimise harsh detergents.

This method, when approached with care and the right product, preserves hair's natural strength.
