Co-washing: avoiding breakage and build-up.

Co-washing: avoiding breakage and build-up.

Co-washing, or conditioner-only washing, relies on cationic surfactants, which are milder than anionic varieties in traditional shampoos. This minimises cuticle lifting and protein loss.

The primary benefit lies in its reduced stripping action, preserving the hair’s natural lipids and moisture. This suits dry, curly, or chemically treated hair types particularly well.

However, the very gentleness of co-washing can lead to product accumulation. Heavier emollients may leave residues, stifling follicles and causing a dull appearance.

Hair is most vulnerable when wet. Detangling during a co-wash — especially if inadequately lubricated — can result in significant breakage.

Maintaining the hair’s slightly acidic pH — typically between 4.5 and 5.5 — is crucial. Products formulated to respect this balance keep the cuticle smooth and resilient.

Most co-washes primarily focus on conditioning, often overlooking gentle cleansing. Evera’s plant-led approach incorporates botanical extracts and lightweight glycerides for mild emulsification, lifting impurities.

Our formulations offer sufficient cleansing through carefully selected non-ionic surfactants derived from coconut, alongside hydrating polysaccharides. This ensures a clean scalp without compromising the moisture barrier.

Proper technique is paramount. Thoroughly wet hair, apply generously to scalp and lengths, then gently massage for several minutes. Allow the product to sit before rinsing.

Rinsing is just as critical. Residual product causes build-up, counteracting benefits. Use cool water to help seal the cuticle and enhance shine.

When executed with the correct product and method, co-washing offers a valuable ritual for maintaining hair health and moisture.

Understanding the correct frequency for hair masking is crucial for efficacy. Over-masking can lead to product build-up and weigh hair down, diminishing its natural vitality.
