What heat damage looks like under a microscope.

At temperatures exceeding 180°C, the α-helical structure of keratin protein within the hair fibre begins to denature. This fundamental change initiates structural degradation, often before visible signs appear.

Under a scanning electron microscope, heat-damaged hair reveals altered surface topography. Cuticle scales, normally flat, become lifted, fractured, or absent, exposing the vulnerable inner cortex.

This compromise to the cuticle’s lamellar structure increases porosity and dryness as water escapes. The hair’s vital ability to retain beneficial lipids is also hindered.

Beyond the cuticle, thermal stress impacts cortical cells and their intricate polypeptide chains. Excessive heat severs crucial disulphide bonds, weakening the fibre and increasing breakage.

The lipid matrix within the cortex also suffers. Natural fats — ceramides and fatty acids like palmitic acid — maintain internal cohesion. Heat degrades these, leading to brittle texture and dullness.

Most conventional heat protectants form a superficial polymer film. While offering immediate defence, they often fail to address deeper, internal damage or replenish lost components effectively.
