Conditioner for the scalp. A considered approach to application.

Conditioner for the scalp. A considered approach to application.

Many haircare routines strictly advise against applying conditioner to the scalp. However, a significant number of scalp conditions — from dryness to oiliness — can benefit from targeted conditioning, when the product formulation is appropriate.

Traditional conditioners are often formulated with heavier lipids and silicones, intended to smooth the hair cuticle and provide slip to the mid-lengths and ends. Applied indiscriminately to the scalp, these can indeed lead to build-up and a sensation of greasiness.

The scalp’s skin, much like the face, benefits from hydration and a balanced pH. Over-cleansing without subsequent conditioning can disrupt the natural barrier, leading to transepidermal water loss and irritation.

Most mass-market conditioners contain high levels of long-chain fatty alcohols and cationic polymers designed for surface deposition on hair fibres. Evera conditioners, conversely, prioritise botanical extracts and humectants that support both hair and scalp health.

Ingredients like aloe vera polysaccharides or specific glycerides offer soothing and hydrating properties without occluding follicles. These active compounds are absorbed rather than simply coating the surface.

For those with dry, itchy scalps, a light application of conditioner can replenish moisture. This helps to reduce flaking and discomfort, fostering a healthier environment for hair growth.

Even oily scalps can sometimes benefit from conditioning, if the oiliness is a compensatory response to dryness. A balanced application can signal to the sebaceous glands that excessive oil production is not required.

The method is key — work a small amount into the scalp after shampooing, using fingertips. Allow it to sit for a minute or two before rinsing thoroughly.

Focus on massaging the product gently into the skin, not just coating the hair at the root. This ensures the beneficial ingredients make direct contact where they are needed.

Selecting a conditioner with a lighter texture and ingredients known for their skin-friendly benefits is paramount. This careful consideration enables comprehensive care for both hair and scalp.

When chosen and applied thoughtfully, conditioner at the roots is not an error, but an intentional step towards scalp vitality.
