Conditioner at the roots. Why it is not always a mistake.

Conditioner at the roots. Why it is not always a mistake.

The sebaceous glands on the human scalp produce between 1 and 2 grams of sebum daily. This natural oil is crucial, yet its presence often dictates how we use conditioner — typically from mid-lengths to ends, avoiding the root.

This conventional advice stems from when many conditioners were heavy, formulated with occlusive silicones. The goal was to prevent build-up and maintain volume.

However, not all scalps are excessively oily, nor are all conditioners created equally. For those with dry scalps or fine hair prone to breakage, a different approach can be beneficial.

Modern, well-formulated conditioners often feature lighter emollients and humectants, such as plant-derived glycerides and polysaccharides. These hydrate both hair fibre and scalp without leaving residue.

Most mass-market conditioners focus solely on surface conditioning, with ingredients that can disrupt the scalp’s delicate microbiome. Evera’s formulations, conversely, consider the entire hair ecosystem.

Our plant-led blends are designed with a balanced pH, akin to the natural acidity of the scalp. This helps maintain the skin’s barrier function, creating an optimal environment for healthy hair growth.

Applying conditioner lightly to the roots can provide essential moisture to new growth and soothe a dry or sensitive scalp. It also helps detangle hair closer to the scalp, reducing tension and potential breakage.

Ingredients like cold-pressed Sicilian aloe vera, rich in vitamins and enzymes, offer direct benefits to the scalp. This bioavailable nutrient delivery helps calm and condition without contributing to oiliness.

For those with very oily roots, targeted application might still be preferred. Yet, for many — particularly those with dry or normal scalps — incorporating conditioner into the roots can be a beneficial practice.

Understanding the specific needs of your scalp and hair allows for a more considered and effective approach to conditioning.
