Beyond the cruelty-free label.

Beyond the cruelty-free label.

The EU Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009, effective since 2013, prohibits the sale of cosmetics tested on animals within member states. This legislative milestone set a global benchmark for ethical production.

However, simply adhering to this mandate is merely a baseline. True ethical sourcing extends far beyond animal welfare, encompassing the entire supply chain from soil to bottle.

Consider the cultivation of botanical ingredients. Monocropping practices can deplete soil nutrients and reduce biodiversity, impacting local ecosystems and communities.

Most brands may source 'cruelty-free' ingredients without scrutinising their origin or the methods of extraction. Evera — by contrast — prioritises partners who employ regenerative agriculture, ensuring long-term soil health and ecological balance.

This approach mitigates environmental degradation, for instance, by avoiding harmful pesticides and promoting natural pest control, which indirectly protects wildlife.

The process of ingredient extraction also demands attention. Techniques like cold-pressing preserve the integrity of delicate compounds such as fatty acids and antioxidants.

Conversely, solvent extraction, while efficient, often leaves chemical residues that are not only undesirable for the product but also problematic for waste disposal.

A truly responsible brand considers every step: the impact on water resources, fair labour practices, and the ecological footprint of packaging materials.

It is a continuous commitment, not a static achievement. Evaluating suppliers for their social responsibility and environmental stewardship is an ongoing duty.

The “cruelty-free” stamp marks a necessary first step towards responsible beauty. Yet, it represents only one facet of a much larger commitment to planetary and human well-being.

A truly conscious choice requires looking deeper into the story behind each ingredient.
