Many cosmetic ingredients, even plant-derived ones, often rely on animal processing aids during their manufacture. For instance, some glycerine — a common humectant — can be derived from animal fats or processed with animal enzymes.

Our standard for vegan goes further than simply avoiding direct animal ingredients listed on the INCI. It necessitates a thorough vetting of every raw material’s full lifecycle, ensuring no animal inputs are used at any stage of synthesis or purification.

A significant challenge arises with ingredients like fatty acids or emollients, which might start as plant sources but often employ animal-derived stearic acid or other glycerides as processing agents or emulsifiers. These trace elements are rarely disclosed by suppliers.

Most “vegan” certifications primarily check the final ingredient list for animal names. Evera, however, demands comprehensive documentation from our Italian suppliers, detailing every step of an ingredient’s production — from initial extraction to final refinement.

This meticulous approach ensures that even complex plant extracts, rich in polysaccharides or natural esters, are truly free from animal-derived catalysts or filtration aids like chitin. The diligence is in the detail, not just the label.

We prioritise cold-pressed oils and sustainably sourced botanicals, where the integrity of the raw material is preserved without recourse to harsh chemicals or questionable processing. This reduces the risk of hidden animal-derived components.

Beyond the ethical imperative, this strict adherence to purity also ensures a cleaner, more consistent product. It minimises the chance of unexpected reactions and supports the natural efficacy of our plant-led formulations.

Consider a simple ingredient such as lecithin. While usually plant-derived from soy or sunflower, its manufacturing process can sometimes involve animal-based carriers or purification agents if not explicitly certified.

This stringent procurement policy means our formulations are genuinely plant-powered, reflecting a deep commitment to transparency and ethical sourcing. Our promise is not merely the absence of animal products, but an assurance of their complete exclusion throughout the supply chain.

This is what we mean by vegan, not the lazy kind.
