Dimethicone, a common silicone polymer, forms a smooth, water-resistant film around hair strands. This immediate sleekness is often the primary appeal in many haircare formulations, providing a temporary solution for frizz and tangles. It creates a perceived softness and shine.

These synthetic compounds are highly effective at coating the hair shaft, imparting slip and preventing moisture loss. The molecular structure of silicones means they do not penetrate the hair cuticle, instead remaining on the surface.

Over time, however, this build-up can lead to issues. Silicones can accumulate, particularly with repeated use of non-water-soluble varieties, creating a barrier that prevents genuine hydration from reaching the hair. This phenomenon is often referred to as ‘silicone build-up’.

Hair can begin to feel heavy, limp and lack its natural volume and movement. The initial shine may diminish, replaced by a dullness as light reflects off an uneven, coated surface rather than the natural hair itself.

Removing these persistent layers often requires stronger clarifying shampoos, which can strip the hair’s natural oils and disrupt its delicate pH balance. This cycle of coating and stripping can inadvertently compromise the hair’s long-term health.

Most conventional formulations rely on silicones for their immediate cosmetic effect. Evera, by contrast, focuses on plant-led ingredients — such as cold-pressed botanical oils and hydrolysed proteins — to deliver authentic nourishment and structural integrity.

Beyond individual hair health, the environmental impact of certain silicones, particularly cyclic silicones like cyclopentasiloxane, is also a consideration. These compounds are less biodegradable and can persist in aquatic environments.

Choosing haircare free from synthetic silicones allows hair to breathe and absorb nutrients effectively. It supports a natural balance, fostering strength and lustre from within, rather than merely masking surface concerns.
