A single strand of human hair, viewed at 500x magnification, reveals a complex architecture. Its outermost layer, the cuticle, comprises overlapping scales crucial for strength and moisture retention.

When subjected to temperatures exceeding 180°C, this delicate structure fundamentally alters. Intense heat causes rapid denaturation of keratin proteins within the cortex, leading to an irreversible loss of elasticity.

Microscopic images of heat-stressed hair show lifted, fractured cuticle scales. They become jagged and porous, creating an uneven surface that compromises the hair’s primary defence.

Beyond the cuticle, internal cortical cells suffer significant damage. The α-helical structure of keratin — vital for tensile strength — can unwind, causing brittleness and breakage.

The lipid layer, normally sealing moisture within the hair shaft, is also degraded by heat. This compromise leads to rapid efflux of water, resulting in dryness and a dull appearance.

Observably, heat damage increases hair’s porosity. It absorbs water quickly but struggles to retain it, creating a cycle of swelling and shrinking that weakens the fibre.

Most conventional heat protection products form a superficial film, offering limited defence. Evera formulations, by contrast, utilise specific botanical lipids and saccharides that penetrate deeper to fortify the protein matrix.

The cumulative effect of these microscopic changes is hair that appears visibly damaged — frizzy, dull and prone to splitting. The smooth reflection of light is lost, replaced by a scattered, uneven surface.

Understanding these internal alterations underscores the importance of mindful heat application and targeted preventative care.
