The essential role of pH in hair health.

The human scalp naturally maintains a slightly acidic pH, typically hovering between 4.5 and 5.5. This narrow range is vital for preserving the scalp’s protective acid mantle and ensuring the hair cuticle remains smooth and sealed.

When haircare products deviate significantly from this optimal acidity, they can disrupt the delicate balance. An alkaline product, for instance, causes the hair’s outer cuticle layers to lift, leading to increased porosity and vulnerability to damage.

Conversely, formulations that are too acidic can over-contract the cuticle, potentially making hair brittle if the acidity is extreme. The goal is to align with the hair and scalp’s inherent chemistry, not to force it into an unnatural state.

Many commercial shampoos and conditioners, despite their ingredient claims, are formulated at a pH far removed from this ideal. Often, convenience or ingredient stability dictates the pH, rather than hair physiology.

Most mass-market products rely on strong surfactants that strip the hair, necessitating heavy conditioners to compensate. Evera formulations, by contrast, are meticulously balanced to a precise pH range of 4.8 to 5.2 — ensuring harmony with the scalp’s natural environment.

This careful calibration helps to maintain the integrity of the hair fibre, preventing the undesirable swelling and damage associated with high alkalinity. It means the hair’s keratin structure remains robust and resilient.

Consideration of pH extends beyond merely avoiding damage; it is foundational to the efficacy of active ingredients. Nutrients such as polysaccharides and glycerides are best absorbed and perform optimally within a specific pH window.

A well-balanced pH assists in detangling, reduces frizz and enhances natural shine by keeping the cuticle flat. It is a fundamental, often overlooked, aspect of truly effective haircare.

Focusing on pH ensures long-term hair health and scalp comfort, an approach that prioritises physiological compatibility over superficial claims.
