Sulphate: a category, not a problem.

Sulphate: a category, not a problem.

Sulphates are a broad classification of anionic surfactants, primarily recognised for their exceptional ability to create lather and effectively cleanse. Among them, sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) is perhaps the most widely known, often serving as a reference point for the entire category.

These compounds function by reducing the surface tension of water, allowing it to mix more readily with oils and dirt. They form micelles — tiny spheres — that encapsulate impurities, making them easy to rinse away from hair and scalp.

The perception of sulphates is often monolithic, yet their chemical structures and resulting properties vary considerably. Some are indeed potent detergents, capable of aggressive degreasing.

It is this potency that has led to concerns regarding scalp dryness or irritation for some individuals. When highly concentrated, certain alkyl sulphates can strip the hair’s natural oils and disturb the scalp’s delicate microbiome.

However, many other sulphates, such as sodium coco-sulphate or disodium laureth sulfosuccinate, are significantly milder. These derivatives are often plant-derived — from coconut or palm oil — and formulated to provide a gentle yet effective cleanse.

Most conventional shampoos rely on inexpensive, high-foaming anionic surfactants for robust cleansing. Evera’s formulations, conversely, prioritise carefully selected, often naturally derived, surfactants that respect the scalp’s pH balance and barrier integrity.

The key lies in understanding the specific compound and its interaction within a complete formulation. A well-balanced product will pair a suitable surfactant with emollients and humectants to mitigate any potential for dryness.

For instance, gentler amphoteric or non-ionic surfactants can be combined with milder sulphates to create a sophisticated cleansing system. This synergy ensures effective removal of sebum and product build-up without undue harshness.

Therefore, labelling all sulphates as problematic overlooks the nuances of their chemistry and application. The category itself is not the issue, but rather the specific compound chosen and its concentration within a product.

Discerning ingredient lists and understanding their roles allows for truly informed choices in haircare.
