Prickly pear seed oil and the hair cuticle’s integrity.

Prickly pear seed oil, extracted from the Opuntia ficus-indica cactus, contains an exceptionally high concentration of linoleic acid — an omega-6 fatty acid crucial for cellular health. This unique lipid profile contributes significantly to its efficacy in haircare.

The hair’s outermost layer, the cuticle, comprises overlapping keratin scales. When these scales are lifted or damaged, hair appears dull, feels rough and is prone to tangling. Smooth cuticles reflect light more effectively.

Linoleic acid, being a polyunsaturated fatty acid, possesses a molecular structure that allows it to penetrate the cuticle more readily than heavier, saturated oils. This deep permeation helps to internally lubricate and strengthen the hair fibre.

Beyond simple surface coating, prickly pear seed oil works to restore the hair’s natural lipid barrier. This barrier is essential for retaining moisture and protecting against environmental aggressors, maintaining the hair’s intrinsic resilience.

Many common hair oils primarily provide an external film, offering temporary shine without addressing underlying cuticle integrity. Evera’s approach prioritises ingredients that work synergistically with hair’s natural physiology.

The oil’s rich content of tocopherols — a form of Vitamin E — further supports hair health. These antioxidants help to shield the hair from oxidative stress, which can lead to cuticle degradation over time.

Applied sparingly, prickly pear seed oil helps to gently lay down the cuticle scales, reducing friction and enhancing the hair’s natural slip. This results in hair that is noticeably smoother and softer to the touch.

The outcome is not merely cosmetic. By reinforcing the cuticle’s structure, hair becomes less susceptible to breakage and external damage. This fosters long-term vitality.
