Understanding the “natural” label on haircare.

Some standards allow a product with as little as 1% plant-derived ingredients to be labelled “natural.” This broad definition permits significant variation, often leaving consumers uncertain of what they are truly purchasing.

Unlike organic certification, with its strict agricultural and processing guidelines, the term “natural” remains largely unregulated in cosmetics. This absence of a universal legal framework grants brands considerable latitude in their claims.

To discern genuine botanical formulations, one must consult the International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients — INCI — list. Ingredients are listed by concentration, from highest to lowest. This transparency is crucial.

Consider olive oil. A cold-pressed, unrefined version retains its full spectrum of fatty acids and antioxidants. A highly refined oil, though still “natural,” may offer diminished benefits due to extensive processing.

Most brands might include a token botanical extract, diluted and stabilised, to satisfy a “natural” designation. Evera’s formulations, however, prioritise potent concentrations of specific plant actives, like high-grade Sicilian aloe polysaccharides, ensuring genuine efficacy.

Polysaccharides, abundant in aloe vera, are complex sugar molecules renowned for their hydrating and soothing properties. Their presence in sufficient quantities provides tangible benefits to hair and scalp.

Even truly natural ingredients can be rendered ineffective through incorrect extraction or formulation. Maintaining the integrity of delicate compounds requires precise techniques and careful handling.

The overall pH balance of a product also plays a vital role, irrespective of its natural claims. An improperly balanced “natural” shampoo can still disrupt the scalp’s microbiome.

Consumers seeking truly plant-led haircare should look beyond front-of-pack declarations. Scrutinising the INCI list for high concentrations of botanical extracts and oils, and understanding their processing, offers a clearer picture.

Genuine efficacy in haircare stems from intentional formulation, not merely from a “natural” badge.
